Taylor “At the Cross” Hudson/arr. Taylor * Call to Worship: Psalm 22 I will declare your name to my brothers; in the congregation I will praise you. For he has not despised or disdained the suffering of the afflicted one; he has not hidden his face from him but has listened to his cry for help. From you comes the theme of my praise in the great assembly; before those who fear you will I fulfill my vows. All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the Lord, and all the families of the nations will bow down before him, for dominion belongs to the Lord and he rules over the nations. * Hymn: PH 384 “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross” Hamburg * Prayer for Maundy Thursday: Almighty God our Father, whose Son, on the night before his Passion, instituted the sacrament of his body and blood, mercifully grant that we may receive it with thanksgiving in remembrance of Jesus Christ our Lord, who in this the paschal supper, gives us a promise of eternal life, and who now lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. * Response: Insert “’Tis Finished! The Messiah Dies” Winchester New Service Of Confession And Prayer Prayer of Confession: Lord Jesus Christ, looking on you whom we have pierced, we mourn for our sins of thought, word, and deed which we have committed against your holy majesty. We have not loved you with all of our heart, nor have we humbly served one another as you have taught us. In the midst of our earthly comforts, we have forgotten the pains and mortal anguish that you endured for our salvation. Grant us a true vision of all that you suffered; in your betrayal, your lonely agony, your false trial, your mocking and scourging, and your shameful death upon the cross. O Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world, have mercy upon us. Forgive us for all of our sins, and as you have given yourself utterly for us, may we give ourselves entirely to you as the Lord of our lives. Silent Prayer and Confession Minister: Amen. Assurance of Pardon: Isaiah 55 Choral Anthem: “When You Prayed Beneath the Trees” Larson Service Of The Word Reading from the Old Testament: Isaiah 52:13-53:6 This is the Word of the Lord. Christ has risen. Christ will come again. Glory be to you, O Lord. THE WORDS OF INSTITUTION PRAYER OF CONSECRATION Heavenly Father, show forth among us the presence of your life-giving Word and Holy Spirit, to sanctify us and your whole church through this sacrament. Grant that all who share the body and blood of our Savior Jesus Christ may be one in him, and remain faithful in love and hope. And as this grain has been gathered from many fields into one loaf, and these grapes from many hills into one cup, grant, O Lord, that your whole church may soon be gathered from the ends of the earth into your kingdom. Now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we pray: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen. INVITATION TO THE TABLE THE DEDICATORY PRAYER We do not presume to come to this your table, O merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in your great and manifold mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under your table. But you are the same Lord, whose nature it is to always have mercy. Grant us therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of your Son Jesus Christ and to drink his blood, that we may evermore dwell in him and he in us. Amen. DISTRIBUTION OF THE BREAD AND WINE (Please hold elements until all have been served. The outer ring holds wine; the inner rings, grape juice.) THE THANKSGIVING Congregation in Christ, since the Lord has fed us at his table, let us praise his holy name with thanksgiving. Praise the Lord, O my soul; all my inmost being praise his holy name. Praise the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits—who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion. Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise. * Hymn of Response: PH 383 “O Sacred Head, Now Wounded” Herzlich Tut Mich Verlangen * God’s Blessing * Silence: Please depart in silent contemplation of our Lord’s passion and obedience unto death. * Indicates congregation stands ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ MAUNDY THURSDAY Maundy Thursday derives its name from the Latin term mandatum, which is a translation of the word “command.” On this night, Jesus instituted what we know as “The Lord’s Supper” during the Passover meal. Following the meal, Jesus taught his disciples saying, “A new command I give you. Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this shall all men know that you are my disciples if you love one another.” (John 13:34-35) We remember this command on what has become known as Maundy Thursday as we share in the table which the Lord has given us.
